Ramsar Convention: The Redgum Forests are covered by the Ramsar Convention. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands was signed in Ramsar in Iran in 1971.  It is an intergovernmental treaty which provides the framework for national action and international co-operation for the conservation and wise use (sustainable use) of wetlands and their resources.

The original emphasis upon the conservation and wise use of wetlands was primarily as habitat for water birds.  However over the years the Convention has broadened its scope to now cover all aspects of wetlands conservation and wise use, recognizing wetlands as ecosystems that are extremely important for biodiversity, conservation AND FOR THE WELL BEING OF HUMAN COMMUNITIES. To view a document outlining the Ramsar Convention and how it fits in with multiple use forests click here.
